Remembering When They Tested Drunk Driving Limits by Getting Drivers Drunk
Science used to be fun!
In the U.S., the legal limit for drinking and driving is a BAC of 0.08. Now, that doesn’t sound like a lot, but if you ever have a few drinks and breathalyze yourself, you’ll realize that 0.08 is actually pretty shwasted. In fact, to reach 0.08, the average person will have to down four drinks in a relatively short amount of time.
Knowing this, you may be wondering how we even decided that 0.08 was safe. Well, there were some tests done — then it was determined that 0.08 was still too high, but the alcohol lobby shut down a bill that would lower it to 0.05. America!
What exactly did these tests entail, though? Some of them may have looked something like this test from a TV network in Ireland, where drivers were asked to drive a course, get drunk and then drive it again.
The difference is pretty stark.
