Tourists in Hawaii Keep Following Google Maps Into the Ocean

At the light, take a left to ruin your car.

People can be over-reliant on Google Maps. If your map says that you should turn right, but your eyes say that there’s not a road there, what are you going to do? Continue forward, or show the car who’s boss by plowing right through that cornfield to your destination?

While most of us will opt for the former, some choose the latter — and suffer as a result.

In Hawaii, locals are having a particular issue: People keep following Google Maps into the ocean. While this may seem like something that could really only happen, I don’t know, one time at most, it’s happened a record three times in a single year, with passengers of the cars often being recorded in disbelief that they managed to do something so stupid.

Local officials are working with Google to try to rectify the problem — though if these people haven’t learned “don’t drive into the water” already, I’m not sure they can be helped.
